From Guadalajara to Gdansk – A Summer of Touring

This summer, Cheek by Jowl had the pleasure of touring three productions around the world: Life is a Dream saw its North American premiere, Hamlet opened in Romania, and Oedipus remained in rep with the Teatrul Naţional “Marin Sorescu”. With our new production of Two Gentlemen of Verona on the horizon, we thought now would be a good time to share with you where we’ve travelled!

Life is a Dream has continued its critically acclaimed run with a number of performances in Spain, including Alcobendas, Pamplona, and Mostoles. The company also travelled to Mexico City for the show’s North American premiere, opening in the prestigious Palacio de Bellas Artes. We then continued onto Guadalajara and Monterey for a few more performances in Teatro Conjunto Santander and Teatro de la Ciudad. A very warm thank you to our Mexican audiences for their gracious welcome!

Meanwhile, Declan and Nick returned to Craiova, Romania to premiere a new production of Hamlet. After its opening week in February, the show has since performed as part of the Shakespeare Olimpics in Craiova and the International Shakespeare Festival in Gdansk. Described as “a masterpiece of theatricality” and “precisely conceived, executed, and superbly played,”  Hamlet has already confirmed performances in Istanbul this November and Madrid in January 2025.

Declan and Nick’s Romanian production of Oedipus remains in repertoire at the Teatrul Naţional “Marin Sorescu,” and will be touring to Tbilisi, Georgia this November.

What’s Next?

As Life is a Dream’s international tour comes to a close, we are happy to announce that we will be working with the company again on a new Spanish-language production of Two Gentlemen of Verona.

Directed and designed by Artistic Directors Declan Donnellan and Nick Ormerod, this marks Cheek by Jowl’s second co-production with the Compañia Nacional de Teatro Clásico and LAZONA Teatro, further solidifying the company’s relationship with Spanish artists and audiences in Europe and further abroad.

More information will be forthcoming soon. In the meantime, make sure to  follow our social media channels or our newsletters to stay up‑to‑date with all of our upcoming work.
