Life is a Dream – on tour

February 2024

Since opening at Teatro Lope de Vega in Seville October 2022, Life is a Dream has performed in 25 theatres, 4 international festivals, and 8 countries.

With more tour dates on the horizon, it’s an exciting time to share with you where we’ve travelled, with some photos on the way (courtesy of the inimitable Manuel Moya).

In Europe, we have played to sold-out houses and critical acclaim in Spain, Italy, Portugal, Bulgaria, Hungary, France, and the United Kingdom. For some cities (like Genoa and Albi) it was Cheek by Jowl’s first time visiting. For others (like Lisbon and Budapest), it was a wonderful opportunity to return and reconnect with our European audiences. Life is a Dream also had a sold-out 10‑week run at the Teatro de la Comedia in Madrid, where the show was described as “Exceptional, highly original and surprising… we don’t remember having seen a more original, daring and transgressive staging of Life is a Dream.” (La Última Bambalina).

We also had an opportunity to return to the United Kingdom twice: to our London home at the Barbican, and to the Royal Lyceum as part of the Edinburgh International Festival. We were delighted to perform in these theatres which are rich for history, and to receive such warm welcomes from British audiences. During the Edinburgh performances, Joyce McMillan from The Scotsman wrote that Life is a Dream was “quietly magnificent…provides a masterclass in the dramatic and poetic force of Calderon’s mighty original text.”

Further abroad, the company travelled to Argentina to perform in Buenos Aires’s Teatro San Martin! This week-long run marked Life is a Dream’s first performance outside of Europe and was critically acclaimed by critics and audiences.

What’s next?

Haven’t managed to make any of the performances so far? We’re happy to announce that Life is a Dream still has a number of upcoming tour dates in 2024, both in Spain and further abroad.

The show’s North American premiere will be in the Palacio de Bellas Artes in Mexico City, where the company will perform from 7–9 May 2024. From there, the show will tour to a number of other Mexican cities.

Not able to make it to Mexico? We have a number of Spanish tour dates in the coming months. We aren’t quite ready to announce any more details, but make sure to follow our social media channels or our newsletters to stay up‑to‑date with all of our upcoming work.
